James
I Sixpence - 1603 to 1625
When
I am stuck for somewhere to detect I have permission to detect
on a small field and the odd Victoria penny turns up and nothing
else. However, this field keeps my old legs and body from
seizing up. So, you can imagine my surprise when this popped
up. James the First sounds to have been a bit of a lad. His
nickname was "the wisest fool in Christendom", but
he was a very educated man. He had 9 children, a couple of
young men in case he became bored and a gang of plotters with
"the gunpowder plot". He had the bible translated
into English and he had Walter Raleigh bumped off. Also this
is the time when the pilgrim fathers set sail to buy a house
in the sun.
